The sky on January 13, 2026
January 13, 2026 fell on the eve of Makar Sankranti. The Sun was in the last degrees of Sagittarius, a day and a half from entering Capricorn, and it was not alone there: Mars and Mercury were in Sagittarius with it, Mars within a degree of the Sun. Venus entered Capricorn that day. Jupiter was retrograde in Gemini, Saturn in the first degrees of Pisces, and the nodes on the Aquarius-Leo axis.

The configuration in the tradition
Sagittarius is Jupiter's sign. The texts read a planet this close to the Sun as asta (combust) - Mars and Mercury both were - its own significations held back by the Sun's. Venus entering Capricorn moves into the sign of a friend, Saturn. Those are the classical readings of the positions, nothing more.
The market that day
Nifty 50 opened at 25,897 and closed at 25,732, a fall of 164 points (-0.64%), with a low of 25,603.
Coincidence is not cause
These events coincided in time. That is not evidence that one caused the other, and we do not claim it. A move of this size sits well inside Nifty's ordinary daily range. We have tested planetary timing rules against years of market data - deflated Sharpe ratios, out-of-sample splits and the probability of backtest overfitting - and across 1,644 strategies on 16 assets none has been distinguished from chance.
Corrected 2 October 2026: an earlier version of this post described a Saturn-Rahu conjunction in Pisces on this date; there was none - Saturn was in Pisces and Rahu in Aquarius, about 17° apart, and the post linked that to the day's market move. The positions above are recomputed from the sidereal (Lahiri) ephemeris for the date.
