How to read this calendar
Vedic transit interpretation rests on a simple frame: the tradition assigns each planet a set of sectors and commodities, and reads a sign change, a retrograde or an aspect as a change in the condition of that planet's significations. Saturn and Jupiter move slowest (about 2.5 years and 1 year per sign), so the tradition treats their shifts as the most durable; Rahu and Ketu change signs about every 18 months; the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move faster. These are associations from the texts. They are classical associations, not forecasts.
Eclipses in the tradition
The classical texts treat eclipses as the most significant of these events. A solar eclipse is read as darkening the Sun's significations (gold, government, leadership); a lunar eclipse the Moon's (silver, public mood, FMCG, dairy). The tradition counts the days around an eclipse inauspicious for beginnings, and treats the eclipse degree as a sensitive point when later transits cross it.
Retrogrades in the tradition
Mercury retrograde (three or four times a year, about three weeks each) gets the most attention. The tradition reads Saturn retrograde (about 4.5 months a year) as review in Saturn's domains of duty and debt, Mars retrograde (every two years, about 2.5 months) as drive turned inward, and Jupiter retrograde (about four months a year) as expansion paused for review rather than reversed.
