What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari (literally "120 years") is the most widely used planetary-period system in Vedic astrology. The complete cycle is exactly 120 years, divided among nine planets — the seven classical planets plus Rahu and Ketu. Each planet "rules" a defined number of years, and during that period, the events of your life take on the colour of that planet's nature.
The 9 Mahadasha periods
- Sun (Surya): 6 years — authority, career peaks, government dealings, gold
- Moon (Chandra): 10 years — emotional life, mother, public mood, silver, FMCG
- Mars (Mangala): 7 years — property, real estate, sudden moves, defence
- Rahu: 18 years — the wildcard; foreign gains, unconventional wealth
- Jupiter (Guru): 16 years — expansion, wisdom, banking, children, gold
- Saturn (Shani): 19 years — discipline, restructuring, debt, crude oil
- Mercury (Budh): 17 years — trade, communication, IT, intellectual income
- Ketu: 7 years — detachment, spirituality, sudden endings
- Venus (Shukra): 20 years — luxury, partnership, jewellery, sugar
How your starting Dasha is determined
The Dasha sequence begins from the planet ruling your janma nakshatra (birth nakshatra). The portion of that nakshatra already traversed by the Moon at your birth determines how much of the first Mahadasha you "skip" — the remainder runs from your birth onward. This is why two people born minutes apart can have very different Dasha sequences.
Antardashas (sub-periods)
Each Mahadasha is further subdivided into 9 Antardashas — sub-periods of the 9 planets in the same proportional sequence. So Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) contains a Rahu-Rahu sub-period (~2.85 years), a Rahu-Jupiter sub-period (~2.4 years), and so on. The combination (Mahadasha lord + Antardasha lord) is the actual "year-flavour" of your life.
