The Planetary Sky of January to April 2026: Mars from Capricorn to Pisces | Crude Oil Archive

Crude oil nearly doubles

April 7, 2026 recorded one of the largest crude oil moves in recent memory: WTI at $112.41/barrel was 89% above January's $59.50, nearly doubling in three months. MCX crude, with a weaker rupee (90.24 → 92.97), had risen from about ₹5,530/bbl to ₹10,451/bbl.

The sky in the same weeks

Mars, the classical significator of fire, energy and fuel, entered Capricorn - the sign of its exaltation - on January 16, moved into Aquarius on February 23 and into Pisces on April 2; it was direct throughout. Jupiter, retrograde in Gemini since late 2025, stationed direct on March 11. Saturn spent the whole period in Pisces and Rahu in Aquarius. On April 7 the Sun was in the last degrees of Pisces; it entered Aries on April 14. The tradition associates an exalted Mars with energy and effort - a classical association, nothing more.

Coincidence is not cause

These events coincided in time. That is not evidence that one caused the other, and we do not claim it. Crude oil's move had well-documented economic drivers. We have tested planetary timing rules against years of market data - deflated Sharpe ratios, out-of-sample splits and the probability of backtest overfitting - and across 1,644 strategies on 16 assets none has been distinguished from chance.

The rupee in the same period

The rupee weakened from 90.24 in January to 92.97 by April 7. For India, which imports about 85% of its crude requirement, crude up 89% in dollar terms and a rupee 3% weaker together raised the rupee cost of crude imports by roughly 95% - a significant strain on the trade balance.

Corrected 2 October 2026: an earlier version of this post described Mars as retrograde in Cancer and stationing direct in early 2026, and the Sun as entering Aries before April 7; Mars was direct and in Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces in these months, and the Sun entered Aries on April 14. The positions above are recomputed from the sidereal (Lahiri) ephemeris for the date.
