Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga: When a Debilitated Planet Stops Being Weak

A debilitated planet is the most alarming thing an amateur reading finds, and often the least important. Classical practice recognises that debilitation can be cancelled, and when it is, the planet is not merely repaired. Some texts read it as producing an unusually strong result. That combination is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, and it appears in 43.4 percent of charts, so knowing the conditions matters more than knowing the name.

Debilitation first

A planet is debilitated, neecha, in the sign opposite its exaltation. The deepest point of debilitation is an exact degree.

SunLibra10 degrees
MoonScorpio3 degrees
MarsCancer28 degrees
MercuryPisces15 degrees
JupiterCapricorn5 degrees
VenusVirgo27 degrees
SaturnAries20 degrees

Debilitation is a statement about capacity, not about intent. The planet still signifies what it signifies and still rules the houses it rules; it has less ability to deliver them. A debilitated 11th lord still owns your gains.

The five cancellation conditions

Classical texts, principally the Phaladeepika and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, list conditions under which debilitation is annulled. The commonly cited five:

  1. The dispositor is in an angle. The lord of the sign the debilitated planet occupies sits in a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, from the ascendant or from the Moon.
  2. The planet that would be exalted in that sign is in an angle. For a debilitated Sun in Libra, that planet is Saturn, which is exalted in Libra.
  3. The debilitated planet is aspected by its dispositor, or by the planet exalted in that sign.
  4. The debilitated planet is in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon.
  5. The planet is retrograde, or is exalted in the Navamsa. See retrograde planets in your birth chart and the D9 Navamsa.

Authorities differ on how many conditions must be met and on whether all five carry equal weight. Some require only one; others treat them as cumulative. That disagreement is genuine, and a reading that presents cancellation as a settled binary is overstating what the texts support.

Our measurement

Across 500 generated charts, run through the same detection that powers our free birth chart, Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga appeared in 43.4 percent. Sitting alongside Vipareeta Raja at 52.0 percent and Dhana Yoga at 51.0 percent, it is one of the common combinations rather than a rarity. More in Raja Yoga and the classical yogas.

That frequency makes sense. With seven planets, a debilitation somewhere is likely, and with five separate cancellation routes, at least one applying is likely too.

The distinction most readings blur

Here is the part worth being careful about.

Neecha bhanga means the breaking of debilitation. Read literally, it says the weakness is removed. The Raja Yoga suffix, which promises an unusually strong result, is a stronger claim and it is not universally supported. Several classical authorities describe only the cancellation.

The conservative reading, and the one we would defend, is that cancellation restores a planet to something like ordinary function. The stronger reading, that a cancelled debilitation outperforms a normal placement, is quoted far more often than the texts justify - and it is quoted because it is the flattering version.

There is a defensible version of the stronger claim. A planet that begins compromised and recovers is classically associated with a life pattern of rising from difficulty, and the texts sometimes describe that trajectory rather than a superior endpoint. That is a statement about shape, not magnitude.

Reading it in a money chart

The practical sequence:

  1. Is the debilitated planet financially relevant to you? A debilitated planet ruling your 3rd and 8th is a different matter from one ruling your 2nd and 11th. Rulership tables by ascendant are in financial strengths and challenges of every sign.
  2. How deep is the debilitation? A planet at the exact debilitation degree and one at the far edge of the sign are treated very differently, and popular readings almost never check.
  3. Which cancellation applies, and how strongly? Name the condition rather than accepting the label.
  4. What does the D9 say? A planet debilitated in the D1 and exalted in the Navamsa is the clearest case there is.
  5. Does its dasha run? Print yours on the Dasha Calculator.

Worked example

Take a Cancer ascendant with Mars debilitated in Cancer in the 1st house. Mars is the yogakaraka for a Cancer ascendant, ruling the 5th and the 10th, so this is a consequential placement rather than an incidental one.

Cancellation checks: the dispositor is the Moon, which rules Cancer - is it in an angle? Jupiter is exalted in Cancer - is it in an angle? Is Mars itself in an angle, which it is, being in the 1st? That last condition alone satisfies one of the five.

So the honest reading is: a yogakaraka that is debilitated by sign, cancelled by angular placement, and therefore restored to workable rather than rendered exceptional. That is a more useful sentence than either 'your Mars is debilitated' or 'you have Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga', and both of those would have been true.

The standing limit

This is classical structure, not forecasting.

Frequently asked questions

What is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga?

A combination in which a debilitated planet's weakness is cancelled by one of several classical conditions, most commonly its dispositor or the planet exalted in that sign being in an angle, or the debilitated planet itself being angular. The Raja Yoga suffix claims an unusually strong result, which is less universally supported than the cancellation itself.

How common is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga?

We measured 43.4 percent across 500 generated charts. With seven planets a debilitation somewhere is likely, and with five separate cancellation routes at least one applying is likely too, so the combination is common rather than rare.

Does cancelled debilitation make a planet strong?

The conservative reading is that it restores the planet to ordinary function rather than making it exceptional, and that is the reading we would defend. Some texts do describe a life pattern of rising from difficulty, which is a claim about trajectory rather than about final strength.

What are the conditions for Neecha Bhanga?

The commonly cited five are: the dispositor in an angle; the planet exalted in that sign in an angle; the debilitated planet aspected by either of those; the debilitated planet itself in an angle from the ascendant or Moon; and the planet being retrograde or exalted in the Navamsa. Authorities differ on how many must apply.

Is a debilitated planet always a problem?

No. Debilitation reduces capacity, not intent, and its importance depends entirely on what that planet rules for you and how deep the debilitation is. A planet at the exact debilitation degree and one at the far edge of the same sign are treated very differently, and most readings never check which.

Should I get a remedy for a debilitated planet?

Check first whether the debilitation is cancelled, how deep it is, and whether the planet is financially relevant to your chart at all. Three of the four classical remedy categories cost nothing, and we publish no claim that any remedy changes a financial outcome. We are not SEBI-registered.
