Financial Strengths and Challenges of Every Zodiac Sign
Most sign-based money content reads your Moon sign and stops. This one reads your ascendant, which is where the money houses actually come from. In Vedic astrology the 2nd house of accumulated wealth and the 11th house of gains are counted from the lagna, so which planet governs your savings depends entirely on which sign was rising when you were born. That is a specific, checkable fact about you, and it is far more useful than a temperament label.
Below, all twelve ascendants with their money-house lords, whether they carry a yogakaraka, and the one check most worth running on each. If you do not know your ascendant, generate your free birth chart, and note that it requires an accurate birth time, for reasons we measured directly.
All twelve ascendants and their money houses
| Ascendant | 2nd lord (savings) | 11th lord (gains) | 10th lord (career) | Yogakaraka |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | Saturn | Saturn | None |
| Taurus | Mercury | Jupiter | Saturn | Saturn |
| Gemini | Moon | Mars | Jupiter | None |
| Cancer | Sun | Venus | Mars | Mars |
| Leo | Mercury | Mercury | Venus | Mars |
| Virgo | Venus | Moon | Mercury | None |
| Libra | Mars | Sun | Moon | Saturn |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Mercury | Sun | None |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | Venus | Mercury | None |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Mars | Venus | Venus |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Jupiter | Mars | Venus |
| Pisces | Mars | Saturn | Jupiter | None |
Two ascendants stand out immediately. For Leo, Mercury rules both the 2nd and the 11th. For Aquarius, Jupiter rules both. In those two charts a single graha governs both what arrives and what stays, which concentrates an unusual amount of financial meaning in one planet and makes its condition the first thing to check.
What the yogakaraka column means
A yogakaraka is a planet that rules both a kendra, one of the angles at 4, 7 or 10, and a trikona, one of the trines at 5 or 9. Because it holds both an action house and a fortune house, it can form a Raj Yoga on its own rather than needing a relationship between two lords.
Only six ascendants have one, and they are worth knowing: Taurus and Libra have Saturn, Cancer and Leo have Mars, Capricorn and Aquarius have Venus. If you are one of the six, the condition of that single planet does more work in your chart than any other factor. The distinction between status and wealth combinations is set out in Raj Yoga vs Dhan Yoga.
Sign by sign: the strength, the challenge, the check
| Ascendant | Classical strength | Classical challenge | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Earns through initiative; Venus rules a favourable 2nd | Saturn rules both career and gains, so the temperament wants speed and the money houses reward patience | Saturn's dignity and house |
| Taurus | Strongest retention of the twelve; Saturn is a yogakaraka | Cannot exit a position; concentration builds unnoticed | Saturn, which carries both fortune and career |
| Gemini | Plural income; Mars rules gains from its own sign | The Moon rules savings, so retention swings with mood | The Moon's paksha bala, waxing or waning |
| Cancer | Strong saver; Mars is a yogakaraka carrying career and speculation | Mars is debilitated in Cancer itself, so the yogakaraka needs checking | Mars, and whether its debility is cancelled |
| Leo | Earns through standing; Mercury rules both money houses from its own signs | Lifestyle calibrated to position rather than balance sheet | Mercury for combustion, since it rules both money houses |
| Virgo | Best natural budgeter; Venus rules both the 2nd and the 9th | Venus is debilitated in Virgo; under-invests and under-charges | Venus, and whether its debility is cancelled |
| Libra | Saturn is both yogakaraka and exalted here | Decisions deferred until circumstance makes them; the Sun is debilitated | Saturn, which is doubly empowered in this chart |
| Scorpio | Jupiter rules both the 2nd and the 5th from its own signs | Will not admit an error; privacy prevents correction | Jupiter, which carries savings and speculation |
| Sagittarius | Earns through trust and counsel; Venus rules gains | Commits on projections; Saturn ruling the 2nd is the only brake | Saturn, which governs what an expansive sign keeps |
| Capricorn | Most durable accumulator; Venus is a yogakaraka | Scarcity thinking outlives its cause; Jupiter is debilitated here | Venus, carrying career and creative risk |
| Aquarius | Jupiter rules both money houses; Venus is a yogakaraka | Holds conclusions without a mechanism to revise them | Jupiter, which governs both gains and savings |
| Pisces | Jupiter rules ascendant and career; Saturn rules gains, which holds | Boundaries; Mercury is debilitated here, so arithmetic follows narrative | Mars, which rules both savings and fortune |
How to use this properly
- Find your ascendant on the free birth chart. Not your Moon sign, and not your western Sun sign.
- Look up your 2nd and 11th lords in the first table.
- Assess each one: sign dignity, combustion, house placement, affliction, and its position in the D9 Navamsa.
- Check whether they connect to each other, which is what forms a Dhana Yoga.
- Check whether their periods run during your working life on the Dasha Calculator, because a combination only delivers when its planet's dasha arrives.
Every row above is a starting hypothesis produced by rulership alone. A debilitated 2nd lord in the 12th house reverses the reading regardless of what the table says. Rulership tells you the mandate; dignity and placement tell you the capacity.
The honest limit
All of the above is structure within a framework. On whether the framework predicts anything financial, we have our own data: across nine assets, two holding periods and forty-plus indicator and composite strategies, each corrected with a deflated Sharpe ratio, a fixed out-of-sample split and a probability-of-backtest-overfitting test, every asset returned indistinguishable from luck. Adding factors made the statistics worse, not better.
We publish that because it is the result. Use this framework for self-understanding, and take financial decisions with a SEBI-registered adviser. Method on the technology page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I read my ascendant or my Moon sign for money?
Your ascendant. The 2nd house of savings and the 11th house of gains are counted from the lagna, so which planet governs your money depends on your rising sign. The Moon sign describes temperament, which is useful and is a different question.
Which ascendant is best for wealth?
The classical texts do not rank them, and no ascendant is inherently wealthy. What varies is the shape: which grahas carry the mandate and how easily they can be strengthened. The six ascendants with a yogakaraka have a single planet that can do a great deal of work, which is an advantage only if that planet is well placed.
What is a yogakaraka and which ascendants have one?
A planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona, able to form a Raj Yoga on its own. Six ascendants have one: Taurus and Libra have Saturn, Cancer and Leo have Mars, Capricorn and Aquarius have Venus. For those charts the condition of that one planet outweighs most other factors.
Why does one planet ruling both money houses matter?
Because it concentrates risk and reward in a single graha. For a Leo ascendant Mercury rules both the 2nd and 11th; for an Aquarius ascendant Jupiter does. If that planet is strong, both gains and retention are supported together. If it is debilitated or combust, both are compromised together.
Do I need an exact birth time for this?
Yes, more than for anything else in a chart. The ascendant moves about a degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours. We measured the effect on a real chart: ten minutes of error moved the ascendant a whole sign, changed every house lord and removed a yoga entirely.
Can this tell me how wealthy I will be?
No. It describes structure, not outcome. Strength, timing through the dasha sequence, and a great many non-astrological facts about your life decide the result. We are not SEBI-registered and publish no financial predictions or recommendations.
