Retrograde Planets in Your Birth Chart (Not the Transit)
Nearly everything written about retrogrades concerns a three-week transit. A retrograde in your birth chart is a different subject: it is permanent, it is in most charts, and the classical texts treat it as a source of strength. That last point reverses the popular reading completely, and it is the reason this deserves its own page.
What retrograde actually is
No planet reverses direction. Retrogression is an apparent backward motion against the fixed stars, produced by Earth overtaking an outer planet, or by an inner planet overtaking Earth. The Sanskrit term is vakri, meaning crooked or bent.
Only five planets can be retrograde in a Vedic chart: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Sun and Moon never are. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde by definition, since the nodes move backward through the zodiac permanently, which is why their retrograde status carries no information.
How common is it
Common enough that it should not be treated as remarkable. We measured it rather than quoting a rule of thumb: 14,610 daily samples across the 40 years from 1986 to 2026, on our own ephemeris.

Saturn is retrograde on more than a third of all days and Jupiter on almost exactly three days in ten, so a natal retrograde outer planet is close to routine. Any reading that treats one as rare or ominous is not describing something unusual about you.
The classical position: retrograde means stronger
This is where popular material and the tradition part company.
In the six-fold Shadbala strength system, one component is chesta bala, motional strength. A planet accumulates chesta bala as it slows toward its station and turns retrograde, and has least when moving fast and direct. So by the classical measure, a retrograde planet is at or near maximum motional strength.
There is a second, more intuitive reason. A retrograde planet is near opposition to the Sun, which is when it is closest to Earth and at its brightest. It is also, by the same geometry, furthest from the Sun and therefore never combust. Retrogression and combustion are mutually exclusive for the outer planets, and combustion is a genuine weakening.
A natal retrograde planet is bright, close, at maximum motional strength and immune to combustion. The classical reading is intensification, not damage. The popular reading has borrowed the transit interpretation and applied it to a permanent condition, where it does not belong.
What intensification means in practice
The consistent classical description is that a retrograde planet's significations turn inward and are worked out repeatedly rather than resolved once. Not weaker, and not easier.

The one place it genuinely complicates a reading
Retrogression interacts with dignity in a way the texts disagree about, and it is worth knowing that the disagreement exists rather than being handed one side of it.
Some authorities hold that a retrograde planet in debilitation behaves as though exalted, and a retrograde planet in exaltation behaves as though debilitated. Others reject this entirely and read dignity and motion as independent. Both positions are classical, and no amount of confidence in a reading resolves it.
Our own practice is to report retrogression and dignity separately rather than to fold one into the other, because collapsing them hides a genuine ambiguity behind a single label.
What it does not mean
- It is not the natal version of a Mercury retrograde transit. The transit advice about contracts and communication concerns a temporary sky condition. A natal retrograde is a permanent feature of temperament.
- It is not rare. Saturn is retrograde on 37 percent of all days. Being born during one is unremarkable.
- It does not mean karmic debt. That framing is modern and has no classical basis we can point to.

How to read yours

- Which houses does it rule for you? Rulership decides what the intensification applies to. A retrograde 11th lord and a retrograde 12th lord are different situations.
- Is it also dignified? Read the two separately and accept that the tradition is split on how they combine.

A natal retrograde is a permanent feature of one chart, and classical practice reads it in the opposite direction, as strength rather than disruption.
Does a retrograde planet reverse its dignity?
Some classical authorities hold that a retrograde debilitated planet behaves as exalted and vice versa; others reject this and read motion and dignity independently. The disagreement is genuine and unresolved, so we report the two separately rather than folding one into the other.
Should I avoid decisions because of a natal retrograde?
No. It is a permanent feature of your chart, so avoiding decisions on account of it would mean avoiding them for life. The useful reading is that the affairs of that planet tend to be revisited rather than settled once, which is a description of how you work rather than a warning.
