Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj 2026: The Two Days After Diwali

Diwali is one night in a five-day sequence, and the two days after it carry more commercial weight than most people outside the affected regions realise. Govardhan Puja falls on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November 2026. Both dates are calculated through a third-party Vedic calculation service.

The five-day sequence, 2026

Diwali / Lakshmi PujaSun 8 NovemberKartik Amavasya
Govardhan Puja / AnnakutTue 10 NovemberKartik Shukla Pratipada
Bhai DoojWed 11 NovemberKartik Shukla Dwitiya

Note the gap between the 8th and the 10th. Amavasya spans two sunrises in 2026, which is why Govardhan Puja falls two days after Diwali rather than the usual one. This is ordinary tithi behaviour, not an error, and it is exactly the kind of thing a scan catches and an assumption does not.

Diwali is the new moon, not the full moon

Worth stating plainly because it is a common confusion.

Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the new moon: the darkest night of the lunar month. The festival of lights is placed on the darkest night deliberately, which is the whole symbolic point. Any tool telling you Diwali is a Purnima is wrong, and we say that with some feeling, having found and fixed exactly that bug in our own panchang.

Govardhan Puja and the business year

Govardhan Puja falls on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the first tithi of the bright half, which makes it the first day of a new lunar month at the start of the waxing fortnight. That placement is why it carries the commercial significance it does.

In Gujarat and parts of western India this day, or the day around it, marks the start of the Vikram Samvat new year and the traditional opening of new account books, the chopda pujan that many businesses perform. The practice of closing one year's ledgers and opening the next around Diwali is still widely observed.

The observance itself, Annakut, is the offering of a mountain of food commemorating Krishna lifting Govardhan hill. Read plainly, it is a harvest and abundance festival attached to the start of a commercial year, which is a coherent thing for a trading community to have built.

Bhai Dooj

Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the second tithi, honouring the bond between brothers and sisters. It is the counterpart to Raksha Bandhan earlier in the year and closes the five-day sequence.

It carries no particular commercial tradition, and we mention that rather than inventing one. Not every festival needs a financial angle, and a site that manufactures one for each is not describing the tradition, it is decorating it.

What the tradition says about starting things now

Kartik Shukla Pratipada has genuine standing in muhurta terms, and the reasons are structural.

  • It opens the waxing fortnight. Shukla paksha is the Moon gaining light, which classical muhurta consistently prefers for anything intended to grow.
  • It is the first tithi of a lunar month, so it is a beginning in the calendar's own terms.
  • It follows Amavasya, the new moon, which the same tradition treats as unsuitable for new undertakings. The contrast is the point.

That is why account books are opened then rather than a week earlier. Whatever one makes of the astrology, the internal logic is consistent. Our investment muhurat and new business muhurat pages cover the framework, and the free business muhurat report scans a window you choose.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you that markets behave differently around these days, or that opening books on Govardhan Puja affects a business outcome.

We make no such claim. The festival buying windows describe a real custom, and a custom is not a forecast.

A custom everyone knows about is not a forecast. Everyone knows the festival buying is coming, so it tells you nothing about what a price will do, and that applies to the whole sequence.

Frequently asked questions

When is Govardhan Puja 2026?

Tuesday 10 November 2026, on Kartik Shukla Pratipada. It falls two days after Diwali this year rather than the usual one, because Amavasya spans two sunrises in 2026, which shifts the following Pratipada.

When is Bhai Dooj 2026?

Wednesday 11 November 2026, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the second tithi of the bright half and the closing day of the five-day Diwali sequence.

Is Diwali a full moon or a new moon?

A new moon. Diwali falls on Kartik Amavasya, the darkest night of the lunar month, and the festival of lights is placed there deliberately. Any calendar or tool showing it as a Purnima is wrong.

Why do businesses open new account books at Diwali?

Because Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Amavasya, is the first tithi of a new lunar month at the start of the waxing fortnight, and in Gujarat and parts of western India it marks the Vikram Samvat new year. The chopda pujan tradition of opening fresh ledgers is still widely observed.

Why is Govardhan Puja two days after Diwali in 2026?

Because tithis are not the same length as solar days, so Amavasya spans two sunrises this year. The following Shukla Pratipada therefore falls on 10 November rather than 9 November. This is normal lunar-calendar behaviour rather than a discrepancy.

Do markets do better after Diwali?

We make no such claim for any festival. We are not SEBI-registered and publish no market forecasts.
