Sharad Navratri 2026: Dates, the Nine Nights and What the Tradition Says About New Beginnings

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October and runs to Navami on Tuesday 20 October, with Vijayadashami observed the same day, as Dashami begins that afternoon. Those dates are computed on our own sidereal engine, not copied from a calendar, and the method is set out at the end so you can check them.

The dates

Tithis begin and end at times of day rather than at midnight, so a festival's calendar date can shift by one day depending on the convention used for which tithi is current at sunrise, and on your location. Regional almanacs differ for exactly this reason. Cross-check against your family's preferred panchang before fixing a ritual time.

What Navratri actually is

Nava ratri is nine nights. There are four Navratris in the lunar year, two of them widely observed and two, the Gupt Navratris, kept quietly. This one, Sharad Navratri, falls in the lunar month of Ashwin at the start of the sharad or autumn season, and is the most publicly celebrated.

It sits in the bright half of the lunar month, shukla paksha, running from the day after the new moon to the ninth tithi. That placement is the whole point, and it connects directly to why the period is chosen for beginnings.

Why the tradition treats it as auspicious for starting things

Three reasons, and they are structural rather than mystical.

  1. It is entirely within the waxing fortnight. Shukla paksha is the Moon gaining light, and classical muhurta consistently prefers a waxing Moon for anything intended to grow. The nine nights sit wholly inside it.
  2. It follows Pitru Paksha. The fortnight immediately before, from the full moon of 26 September to the new moon of 10 October in 2026, is the ancestral period during which new undertakings are traditionally avoided. Navratri is the release from that restraint, which is why the contrast is so marked.
  3. It ends in Vijayadashami, whose name means the tenth of victory, and which classical texts treat as one of the abujha muhurats - days considered auspicious in their own right without needing a specific window calculated.

What gets started, traditionally

The customary undertakings during Navratri and on Vijayadashami are consistent across regions: beginning study or an apprenticeship, taking up a new instrument or craft, purchasing vehicles and property, opening account books, starting a business, and shastra puja, the honouring of tools and instruments of trade.

That last one is the most directly commercial. Honouring the tools of one's livelihood on Vijayadashami is still widely observed in Indian businesses, and the reasoning is worth stating plainly: it is an annual, deliberate acknowledgement of what your work depends on. Whatever one thinks of the astrology, that is a defensible practice.

The nine nights

Each night is associated with a form of the Devi, the Navadurga, and days three, four and five carry the traditional association with Lakshmi and prosperity in several regional practices. The observance varies considerably by region: Gujarat's garba, Bengal's Durga Puja concentrated in the last four days, and the Ramlila tradition of the north culminating in Dussehra.

We are describing rather than prescribing here. Which form is honoured on which night, and by which regional convention, is a matter for your family tradition rather than for a financial-astrology site.

What we will not tell you

This is where we part company with most festival content.

We will not tell you that markets rise during Navratri, that a particular night is favourable for buying equities, or that Vijayadashami produces a measurable effect on prices. We test our own indicators rather than assert them: across nine assets, two holding periods and more than forty indicator and composite strategies, each corrected with a deflated Sharpe ratio, a fixed out-of-sample split and a probability-of-backtest-overfitting test, every asset returns indistinguishable from luck. Festival and tithi-based indicators were among them.

Navratri is a real tradition with a coherent internal logic and centuries of observance. That is a good enough reason to know when it falls. It is not a reason to change a portfolio, and we are not SEBI-registered.

What the period is genuinely useful for is the ordinary thing: it is a culturally sanctioned moment to begin something you have been deferring. A deadline with social weight behind it works, and it does not require the astrology to be predictive.

How we computed these dates

Our engine samples the Moon-Sun elongation to derive the tithi for each day, on the sidereal Lahiri ayanamsa, calibrated to within 0.005 degrees of the reference standard. Ashwin Shukla Pratipada is the first tithi of the bright half following the Pitru Paksha new moon, which our scan places on 10 October 2026; Pratipada therefore falls on 11 October, and Dashami begins nine tithis later, at 12:52 IST on 20 October; because Vijayadashami follows the tithi prevailing in the afternoon (aparahna), it is observed on 20 October.

You can check any individual day yourself on our daily panchang, and follow the slow-planet movements on the transit calendar. For the timing tradition in general, see investment muhurat and new business muhurat.

Frequently asked questions

When is Sharad Navratri 2026?

It begins on Sunday 11 October 2026 with Ghatasthapana on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, runs nine nights to Navami on Tuesday 20 October, and Vijayadashami falls the same afternoon, on Tuesday 20 October. Sharad Purnima falls on Sunday 25 October.

Why do some calendars show a different date?

Because tithis begin and end at times of day rather than at midnight, so which tithi is current at sunrise decides the calendar date, and that depends on location and on the convention a given almanac uses. A one-day difference between regional panchangs is normal rather than an error.

How many Navratris are there in a year?

Four. Two are widely observed, Chaitra Navratri in spring and Sharad Navratri in autumn, and two are Gupt Navratris, kept quietly. Sharad Navratri, in the lunar month of Ashwin, is the most publicly celebrated.

Is Navratri a good time to start a business?

Traditional practice treats it as favourable, for structural reasons: it falls entirely within the waxing fortnight, it follows the ancestral period during which new undertakings are avoided, and it ends in Vijayadashami, which classical texts count among the days auspicious in their own right. That is a statement about tradition, not a prediction about outcomes.

What is shastra puja?

The honouring of the tools and instruments of one's trade, traditionally observed on Vijayadashami and still common in Indian businesses. Read plainly, it is an annual deliberate acknowledgement of what your livelihood depends on.

Do markets perform better during Navratri?

Not in anything we can measure. We ran festival and tithi-based indicators through the same deflated Sharpe, out-of-sample and overfitting pipeline as every other indicator across nine assets, and all returned indistinguishable from luck. We publish no market forecasts and are not SEBI-registered.
