Karwa Chauth 2026: Date, the Tithi Behind It, and the Gold-Buying Question

Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday 29 October, on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. The date is computed on our own sidereal engine rather than copied from a calendar, and the method is at the end so you can check it.

The date and the tithi

Detail2026
DateThursday 29 October 2026
TithiKartik Krishna Chaturthi (the 4th of the waning fortnight)
Nakshatra on the dayMrigashira
Preceding full moonSunday 25 October (Sharad Purnima)
Following new moonSunday 8 November (Diwali)

The observance ends at moonrise, which varies by city by up to about an hour across India, and the tithi itself begins and ends at a time of day rather than at midnight. Both are reasons regional almanacs sometimes differ. Check your own city's moonrise rather than a national figure.

Why the fourth tithi

Karwa Chauth sits on the fourth day of the waning fortnight, which is worth noticing because most auspicious observances prefer the waxing half.

The fourth tithi, Chaturthi, is one of the Rikta tithis in the classical scheme, along with the 9th and 14th. Rikta means empty, and muhurta practice traditionally avoids Rikta tithis for beginning new ventures. Chaturthi is also the tithi associated with Ganesha, which is why Sankashti Chaturthi and Ganesh Chaturthi both fall on it.

So the day is not chosen for its general auspiciousness. It is chosen for the specific observance, and its structure - a fast broken at moonrise on a waning Moon - belongs to that observance rather than to the muhurta tradition. Anyone telling you Karwa Chauth is a favourable day for launching a business has confused two different systems. Our choghadiya guide and investment muhurat page cover what muhurta actually selects for.

The gold question, tested

The festival period from Navratri through Dhanteras and Diwali is the heaviest gold-buying stretch in the Indian year, and Karwa Chauth sits inside it. The commercial question people ask is whether festival demand shows up in the price in a way you could act on.

We tested it directly. Our research engine carries a bullion muhurat demand indicator built specifically on the Pushya and festival buying windows, and it is the one hypothesis in the whole engine with a genuine physical mechanism behind it: real people really do buy real gold on these days.

It scored a deflated Sharpe ratio of approximately zero.

That is the most instructive negative result we have. The mechanism is real, the demand is real, and it still produced no tradeable edge once corrected for multiple testing - because the demand is known in advance by everyone, which is precisely why an anticipated seasonal flow does not move a price in a way you can capture.

Across nine assets, two holding periods and more than forty indicator and composite strategies, every asset in our engine returns indistinguishable from luck. Method on the technology page.

What we would say about buying gold this month

Nothing about timing, and two things about arithmetic.

First, jewellery is not an investment in gold. Making charges, typically 8 to 25 percent, and GST are not recoverable on resale, so the metal has to appreciate substantially before a jewellery purchase breaks even against the same weight in a lower-cost form. That is arithmetic, not astrology.

Second, if the purchase is cultural rather than financial, the arithmetic does not apply and it does not need to. Buying gold for Karwa Chauth because it is Karwa Chauth is a perfectly coherent reason. The problem only arises when a cultural purchase is defended as an investment decision.

Our gold muhurat calculator covers the traditional timing windows, and the Sun and wealth explains the classical gold rulership, including why we treat it as symbolic knowledge rather than a signal.

The festival sequence this year

Karwa Chauth sits in the middle of a dense run, and the dates are all computed from the same lunar scan:

Festival2026 dateTithi
VijayadashamiWed 21 OctoberAshwin Shukla Dashami
Sharad PurnimaSun 25 OctoberAshwin Purnima
Karwa ChauthThu 29 OctoberKartik Krishna Chaturthi
DiwaliSun 8 NovemberKartik Amavasya
Govardhan PujaTue 10 NovemberKartik Shukla Pratipada

Details of the surrounding festivals are in Sharad Navratri 2026, and you can check any individual day on our daily panchang.

How we computed the date

Our engine derives the tithi from the Moon-Sun elongation on the sidereal Lahiri ayanamsa, calibrated to within 0.005 degrees of the reference standard. Kartik Krishna Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of the waning fortnight following the Ashwin full moon of 25 October 2026, which places it on 29 October. A scan of every day from August to December 2026 returns exactly one Krishna Chaturthi in that window.

Frequently asked questions

When is Karwa Chauth 2026?

Thursday 29 October 2026, on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, the fourth tithi of the waning fortnight. The observance traditionally ends at moonrise, which varies by city across India by up to about an hour.

Why does Karwa Chauth fall on a waning Moon?

Because the observance is tied to a specific tithi, Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, rather than chosen for general auspiciousness. Chaturthi is in fact one of the Rikta or empty tithis that muhurta practice avoids for new ventures, so the day belongs to its own tradition rather than to the timing system.

Is Karwa Chauth a good day to start a business?

Classical muhurta practice would not select it, since Chaturthi is a Rikta tithi in the waning fortnight. Anyone presenting it as favourable for launching something has mixed up two different traditions. For that question see our investment muhurat and new business muhurat pages.

Is festival season a good time to buy gold?

We tested the bullion muhurat demand hypothesis directly and it returned a deflated Sharpe of approximately zero. It is the one indicator in our engine with a real physical mechanism, and it still produced no edge, because demand that everybody anticipates is already in the price.

Is gold jewellery a good investment?

Making charges of roughly 8 to 25 percent plus GST are not recoverable on resale, so the metal must appreciate materially before a jewellery purchase breaks even against the same weight held in a lower-cost form. That is arithmetic. If the purchase is cultural rather than financial, it does not need to clear that bar.

Why do different calendars show different Karwa Chauth timings?

Two reasons. Tithis begin and end at times of day rather than at midnight, so which tithi is current at sunrise can differ by location. And the fast is broken at moonrise, which varies across India by up to about an hour. Use your own city's figure.
