Guru Pushya Nakshatra 2026: Dates and Classical Meaning
What Guru Pushya is
Guru Pushya Yoga forms when the Moon is in Pushya nakshatra on a Thursday (Guruvar, the day of Jupiter). In 2026 Pushya falls on a Thursday three times (times for Delhi): from the afternoon of 23 April, through most of 21 May, and from sunrise to around midday on 18 June - the last falling inside Jupiter's exaltation in Cancer, which began on 2 June. It is one of the most celebrated combinations in the muhurta tradition, sometimes called the king of muhurtas.
Why the tradition holds it in such regard
The name Pushya means to nourish. The nakshatra is ruled by Saturn, its deity is Brihaspati (Jupiter, the teacher of the gods), and it lies wholly within Cancer, the sign of Jupiter's exaltation. Thursday adds Jupiter's own day. The tradition reads the combination as nourishing, steady and protective - qualities it associates with beginnings meant to grow slowly and last.
What Jupiter signifies
- Wisdom and learning
- Growth and expansion
- Teachers, counsel and dharma
What Pushya signifies
- Nourishment and care
- Stability
- Protection and steady growth
Activities traditionally associated with Guru Pushya
Households and families have long chosen Guru Pushya for:
- Beginning study - a new course, a new text, the first lesson with a teacher
- Buying gold or silver - one of the best-known customs of the day, kept as a symbol of prosperity
- Opening a shop or office, or beginning a new account book
- Griha pravesh and other household beginnings
- Religious observances and the start of a vow
These are customs about the quality of a moment for a beginning. The tradition makes no claim about the financial outcome of anything begun on the day, and nothing here is a suggestion to buy, invest or open any account.
A personal reading
A general muhurta reads the day's sky alone. A personal reading also considers the person's own chart - the running dasha, Jupiter's placement and the houses involved - which is why astrologers treat the two separately. Frequently asked questions
When is Guru Pushya in 2026?
On three Thursdays: from the afternoon of 23 April, through most of 21 May, and from sunrise to around midday on 18 June (times for Delhi). Exact start and end times vary by city; the daily Panchang shows them for your location.
Why is buying gold associated with Guru Pushya?
It is a long-standing custom: gold is kept as a symbol of prosperity, and the nourishing quality of Pushya on Jupiter's day is traditionally read as fitting for it. It is a cultural practice, not a view on the price of gold.
Does Guru Pushya guarantee success?
No. The tradition describes the quality of a moment; it does not promise any outcome.
