What "retrograde" actually means
Retrograde motion is an optical effect, not a real reversal in a planet's orbit. Because Earth and the other planets travel around the Sun at different speeds and distances, a planet can appear to slow down, stop and briefly move backward across our sky, much as a slower car in the next lane seems to drift backward when you overtake it. The planet itself never changes direction; only its apparent position as seen from Earth does. The moments at which it appears to stop are called stations, and retrograde periods can be computed years in advance, which is why our planetary transit calendar lists every one.
The Sun and Moon are never retrograde. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are always retrograde in their mean motion. Of the five visible planets, Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year for roughly three weeks, Venus and Mars less often, and Jupiter and Saturn for several months each year.

In the Vedic texts a retrograde planet, vakri, is closer to the Earth and appears brighter, and the classical reading is that it is strong but its expression turns inward or returns to unfinished matters. Each planet's retrograde is read through its own significations.

The popular Mercury retrograde advice is to re-read contracts, confirm what you agreed, back up your files and expect delays in paperwork. That advice is attached to Mercury's significations of communication and agreements, and it is sound practice in any three weeks of the year. It is a comment about careful conduct, not a forecast, and it says nothing about where any market goes.
Approaching retrogrades responsibly
- Read them for conduct, not prices. Use a retrograde, if you find the tradition useful, as a prompt to slow down and review your own commitments.
- Read them through your own chart. The house a retrograde planet transits in your chart matters far more than the retrograde itself.
- Keep investment decisions separate. They belong with your own research and a SEBI-registered adviser, not with the transit calendar.
A retrograde is a well-defined astronomical event with a long interpretive tradition about review and return. That makes it worth understanding. It does not make it a market signal.
