The story behind Chaturmas

In the tradition, Lord Vishnu enters yoga nidra, a cosmic sleep upon the serpent Ananta Shesha, on Devshayani Ekadashi - the name means "the day the god sleeps". He is said to awaken on Devuthani Ekadashi in Kartika, and the four months between are treated as a pause in the cosmic order.

How the season is observed

Chaturmas is classically considered inauspicious for weddings, griha pravesh and the ceremonial launch of major new undertakings. That is not because misfortune is expected, but because the season is meant for something else: discipline, devotion and inward reflection. Many households observe it through:
