Kota means fort. The chart is drawn as a square fortress with four enclosures, and the 28 nakshatras — the 27 lunar mansions plus Abhijit — are placed into those enclosures counting from the native's janma nakshatra, the star the Moon occupied at birth. Because the placement starts from your own birth star, every person's fort is arranged differently: the same transit sky stands in different rooms of different people's forts.
Classical texts used the Kota Chakra to judge sieges — literally, the defence of forts and campaigns — and later astrologers extended it to periods of personal adversity and protection. It is a stress-and-resistance reading, not a prediction machine: it describes an arrangement, and the tradition attaches meanings to that arrangement.

A detail that surprises most newcomers: your own birth star sits in Bahya, outside the walls — not at the centre. The placement rule is a repeating palindrome of four groups of seven stars, and the janma nakshatra is the first of the outer group. The intuitive guess (that your star anchors the pillar) is simply not what the classical arrangement does.
Two office-holders matter in every fort. The Kota Swami (lord of the fort) is the ruler of the rashi your natal Moon occupies; classically the fort is considered settled when its lord stands in the heart — Stambha or Madhya. The Kota Pala (guard of the fort) is read from the pada of your natal Moon; the guard's classical place is out on the wall, in Bahya, watching the approaches. A lord wandering outside his own fort, or a guard who has left the wall, are the two placements traditional readers mark first.
The transiting grahas then take their positions: the tradition reads benefics inside the fort as support within the walls, and malefics inside the fort as pressure on it — the siege metaphor carried through consistently.
What our own testing found. We measured Kota stress readings against realised market volatility across fifteen market first-trade charts, correcting for overlapping windows and autocorrelation. Nothing survived: the mean correlation was 0.0119 and the sign agreed on 8 of 15 assets — a coin flip. We publish that openly. The Kota Chakra on this site is offered as a classical personal reading with the arrangement stated plainly, not as a market indicator, because that is what the evidence supports.
