Shubh Muhurta for New Beginnings in 2026: A Classical Calendar
What a muhurta is
In the Vedic tradition a muhurta is a moment chosen for a beginning. Households have long used it for a griha pravesh, a wedding, the opening of a shop or the first entry in a new account book. The choice rests on a handful of classical factors read together: the nakshatra the Moon occupies, the tithi (lunar day), the weekday and its ruling planet, and the periods of the day the tradition sets aside. It is a cultural practice about beginnings; it says nothing about how any market will move.
The classical factors
1. Nakshatra
The sthira (fixed) nakshatras - Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada - are classically preferred for beginnings meant to last, and Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha and Shravana are also widely chosen. Bharani, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula are traditionally passed over for auspicious starts.
2. Tithi
The waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha) is traditionally preferred, and tithis such as the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th are the ones most often chosen. The tradition sets aside the rikta tithis (4th, 9th and 14th) and Amavasya for beginnings.
3. Weekday
Each weekday carries its ruling planet. Thursday (Jupiter) and Wednesday (Mercury) are the days most often chosen for learning, agreements and new ventures, Friday (Venus) for household and comfort, and Monday (Moon) for gentle starts. Tuesday and Saturday are classically reserved for other kinds of work.
4. Periods the tradition sets aside
Within any day, Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are classically avoided for auspicious beginnings, and Bhadra (Vishti karana) is traditionally passed over too. The Choghadiya divides the day into eight bands with their own classical qualities, and the daily Panchang shows the tithi, nakshatra and these periods for your city.
The 2026 sky in context
Jupiter, the planet the tradition associates with growth and wisdom, entered Cancer - its sign of exaltation - on 2 June 2026, and stays there until 31 October 2026 before moving into Leo; it returns to Cancer from 25 January to 26 June 2027. Classical writers read an exalted Jupiter as a dignified, well-supported placement. That is a description of the sky; it is not a statement about any investment or market.

A personal muhurta
A general muhurta uses the day's sky alone. A personal one also reads the person's birth chart - the running dasha and the ascendant - which is why the tradition treats them as two different exercises.
Frequently asked questions
Which nakshatras are classically preferred for a new beginning?
Rohini, the three Uttaras, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha and Shravana are the ones most often named in the classical texts for beginnings meant to last.
Does a muhurta say anything about markets or returns?
No. A muhurta is a tradition about the quality of a moment for a beginning. It makes no claim about prices, returns or the outcome of any financial decision.
