Rahu and Ketu: The Lunar Nodes and Speculation in Vedic Astrology

Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but the two lunar nodes - the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path. Vedic astrology treats them as shadow planets (chhaya graha) with their own significations and dasha periods. This page describes what the tradition says about them; it is not guidance about money or risk.

What the nodes are

The nodes are mathematical points with no physical body. Eclipses happen near them, which is one reason the tradition gives them such weight. They always sit exactly opposite each other and move backward through the zodiac, taking about eighteen months to cross a sign.

Rahu: ambition and the unconventional

Rahu is associated with worldly ambition, foreign lands, unconventional paths, technology and a restless hunger for more. In the financial context the classical texts link it to sudden or unconventional gains - and also describe such gains as capable of being unstable or illusory. That double nature is central to how Rahu is read.

Ketu: detachment and release

Ketu carries almost the reverse signature: detachment, introspection, spiritual pursuit and sudden endings. Where Rahu pulls a person further into the material world, Ketu pulls them back out of it.

The nodal axis

Because the nodes are always 180 degrees apart, they are read together: the house Rahu occupies shows where the chart reaches outward, and the opposite house, holding Ketu, shows what is released.

Rahu and Ketu dashas

Rahu's mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu's 7. The tradition describes Rahu periods as times of heightened ambition and change, and Ketu periods as times of withdrawal and redirection. These are descriptions of themes, not predictions of outcomes. Our dasha and wealth guide and the Dasha Wealth Timeline show how the periods are mapped.

Frequently asked questions

Are Rahu and Ketu real planets?

No. They are the Moon's nodes - mathematical points - which Vedic astrology treats as shadow planets.

Does a Rahu dasha bring gains or losses?

The tradition describes it as a period of ambition and change. It does not predict any specific financial outcome.

Why are Rahu and Ketu always opposite each other?

They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, so by definition they sit 180 degrees apart.
